John H. White Memorial Temple was established in 1970 under the name of Wares Temple Church of the Apostolic Faith under the leadership of Reverend Marcella Wares. In the year 1978 the leadership was transferred to Elder Jennie B. White, and the church's name was changed to the Attalla #2 Apostolic Overcoming Holy Church of God (AOH). Elder White was the pastor for over twenty-five years at which time the church's organizational structure split, thereby forming a new organization - the Apostolic Church of Promise (ACOP). Elder White remained with the senior bishop, Bishop Jasper Roby who remained the Presiding Bishop under the new establishment.
On January 1, 2006, the Attalla #2 ACOP Church of God changed its name to the John H. White Memorial Temple under the leadership of Elder Jennie B. White with Elder Lessie Cofield as assistant to the pastor. Under this leadership a new vision has been set forth and put in motion. The visionary has launched a campaign to building a stronger and vibrant community establishing an Adult Day Care (Seniors not forgotten), an AIDS Program with counseling and referrals (also seminars and lectures raising AIDS awareness and prevention), an After School Program (working with existing school programs), and a Community Upgrading/Improvement Program (identifying abandoned property to be demolished or renovated. The renovated property will be used as low income housing for low income families and seniors). In our community upgrade/improvement program, our effort is to assist in a better quality of life for individuals and families residing within the west side community thereby establishing low income as well as moderate income housing for individuals, families and seniors.
As each change has taken place in the Church, the leadership has remained steadfast in community service. Our motto is to develop minds in an effort to strengthen relationships among individuals and families within and without the community in which we live and serve.
