Adult Day Care
The John H. White Memorial Adult Day Care Program
was birthed in December 2005 when Rev. Cofield established temporary residence in Gadsden from New York City to care for her elderly (92 year old) mother, after serving as a chaplain/supervisor for St.Mary's System for over ten years. She has extensive taining in counseling and supervision of children and the elderly. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary, New York City with Clinical Pastoral Care (CPE) training. She has a BA in Religion and Psychology from the College of New Rochelle, NY. Her residency including involvement with the young and elderly.
In April 2007, a group of church members, from different denominations, agreed to join forces to form an adult day care. This group makes up the board of directors of the John H. White Adult Day Care. Each member has one commonality; we are or were the caregivers of an elderly relative.
We know the urgency of finding help, dependable and reliable help. we have all faced the fact of needing relief and support.
Elderly care has become a national concern and interest. All Americans face or will face the problem of caring for elderly relatives. NBC Nightly News (3/8/07 aired a special segment on this issue, and ABC Nightline (6/25/07)also interviewed siblings and grandchildren caring for their parents and grandparents.
In some cases families are faced with making the decision of placing their love ones in private or public institutions or even nursing homes because they do not have the resources to provide for their love ones at home. It is hard. Nevertheless, it has become necessary for family members to face these difficult decisions because there are few or no alternatives. In some families, a member may decide to leave his/her job to become the primary caregiver. Howebeit, the task is great yet rewarding. However, one comes to realize that support is vital but hard to come by.
We have organized to offer a solution to this growing need. We recognize that our elders are more comfortable with familiar surroundings. We offer an alternative to public facilities or nursing homes. We offer a safe and nurturing center with special supervision where structured recreation and meaningful involvement is encouraged. The elderly are allowed to interact with each other.
Although the elderly are more comfortable in their homes, we know that they too need an outing - going and coming. They need activities to make them feel useful and wanted with something to stimulate their minds and allow them to make significant, healthy choices. Your loved ones are left with our trained staff during operating hours from 8am to 6pm for five (5) days a week Monday thru Friday. Or love ones are left for an hour or two so that the caregiver can run an errand or just to relax and take care of self - support will be provided for the caregiver as a supplement.
We here at the John H. White Adult Day Care propose to provide this structured care. Our Executive Director, Rev. Lessie Cofield, has training in this field (as stated above). Our Board Members are cognitive of all areas of this extensive care; they operate with knowledge and skill. Faye Parker and Debra Perry serve as co-chairpersons. They are both native residents of Gadsden and cared for elderly parents. Faye Parker has a BA degree in Business. She knows the meaning of serious involvement and dedication. She is a retired utility worker and served for over 31 years. And Debra Perry is station manager with WPHX Television in Birmingham. She has been in the television business for over 15 years and has held numerous leadership positions within the community and her church.
Carolyn Fair and Dorothy Lindsay along with Tyrone Fears(Licensed Contractor and Mason) and Earl Perry are board members who are lending their expertise as prior caregivers of elderly relatives. Kathy Childs, RN, serves as our medical advisor, and The Reverend Juan Moreno serves as advisor and brings to the table insurmountable experience as chaplain and educator.
We are a team that consists of Baptist, Episcopal, Methodist, Non-Denominational and Pentecosat. The John H. White Memorial Temple motto is to develop minds in an effort to strengthen personal and corporate relationships among individuals in the community in which we live and serve.

UPGRADING/IMPROVING COMMUNITIES
Our Community Upgrade/Improvement Program is geared toward indentifying abandon buildings and properties in our community. Our plan is to notify owners in an attempt to renovate or demolish the nuisance. And the abandon property is to be cleared and maintained. Also we propose to set up programs to assist residential home owners in obtaining funds for prevention of loss of homes and repairs of homes in danger of eviction and condemnation.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
Our After School Programs will include working with existing school programs in assisting in dropout prevention and no kids left behind.
